Rapid Response - Crisis Management!

Next week you'll be given a double lesson to complete the design, script and all other preparation for the news bulletin on the hurricane in Honduras. Remember, you need to make sure that the public are informed of the facts, but also you are trying to get them to think about how they might best help.

Some statistics from the hurricane:

• 11,000 dead (that is about 13 times the total number in our school)


• 1 million homeless (that's like everyone in Edinburgh and Glasgow being made homeless at once)


• Winds speeds were 180 miles per hour


• There are over 22,000 refugee camps with no basic clean water or sewage system


• The highways have collapsed, and most major roads are unpassable


• There is no clean water supply - you can live for about 3 days without clean water. If you drink dirty water, you could get terrible diseases, and...


• ...hospitals, schools and major institutions are all destroyed, and many doctors, policemen and teachers are amongst the dead

BBC Wildlife Beast Research

Hey folks

This week you've learnt all about functional writing. This means writing that is to tell people about things - like newspaper reports, letters, or reports into beasts.

We've been reading "The Nature of the Beast", where we are starting to see some signs of a mysterious monster creeping around the mysterious town.

So you all pottered down to the library where research was done into gorillas, sloths, a variety of big cats, mermaids, the Loch Ness monster and even unicorns. I've even learnt the unicorn song and that they have a spot just above the heart where you can kill them!

More importantly, our learning outcomes have been:

• How to use books and websites to collect notes, not just copy and paste!


• Using numbered lists and bullet points in reports


• Using headings to sort similar facts together into paragraphs


• How to show where we get our information from - our sources

Finally we raced through the basics of doing a good talk, using the 50:50 rule

1. Good content - interesting start, loads of facts in a formal presentation, and a conclusion


2. Good presentation - look at the audience, nice and confident, loud and clear voice, and no fidgeting.

Today in class we read for ten minutes at the start. we then listened to some peoples talks. i did my talk so i know what it is like to be up there, i was nervous, but it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. If you are going to do your talk on wednesday, good luck!

Friday 5th

On friday it was the last day term so we did something fun.

We were given a card which had a colour and the name of a dog we had to save, so we had to write a couple of paragraphs on why our dog should be saved.

Then we had to make a presentation to our group to explain why our dog should be saved, and then each group took a vote. Only 3 dogs could be saved from each group of 8.
